Straiton
Holly Tree Cottage
The beautiful conservation village of Straiton is the ideal location to explore South Ayrshire and the surrounding area. Situated in the heart of the village is Holly Tree Cottage, a former weaver's cottage, which dates back over 200 years. Close by is Galloway Forest Park with miles of forest tracks for cycling, stocked lochs for fishing and paths for walking. It has some of the world's darkest skies and was the first Dark Sky Park in Britain; perfect for star gazing. There are several signposted walks starting from the village and tickets can be purchased for fishing a stretch of the river Girvan which flows alongside the village, offering anglers the opportunity to catch trout, sea trout or salmon. With a local hotel serving good food, a well-stocked local shop and The Buck coffee shop there's no need to use the car.
Within a short drive are world-class golf courses, Turnberry and Troon, horse riding centres, Culzean Castle, Dumfries House, Dundonald Castle, the beaches of Ayr, Girvan and Croy shore and trips to Ailsa Craig. Day trips to Arran, Glasgow and Northern Ireland are possible.
