Bruern Holiday Cottages
Bruern, near Chipping Norton
With its manicured grass and its tidy verges, the village of Bruern has been called 'perfect'. Outwardly unchanged for a couple of centuries, it is not surprising that so many people who come to stay in one of the eight cottages prettily arranged on three sides of a courtyard at the heart of this very special, very 'English' place want to come back.
National winners of the English Tourism Council's Excellence in England Gold and Silver Awards for Self-Catering Holiday of the Year 1999 and 2003, each of the Bruern Holiday Cottages has been described as 'a mini-stately home with open fires, exceptionally attractive, soft and subtle lighting, deep sofas, fine paintings and prints, many antiques, good quality rugs and carpets, five-foot four poster beds in several cases, show-house kitchens, the sort of bathrooms you would find in discreet, expensive Mayfair hotels'.
We think that the whole place reflects the tender loving care with which it is run, and there are lots of those little touches that mean so much, such as well chosen books and games, frozen (but home-cooked) dishes, maid service and baby sitting, and a welcome-hamper.
Each cottage has its own character and sleeps between 2 and 10. Several have their own enclosed garden and they all have their own private terrace. But there are also impressive communal gardens. Cost: about £289 (smallest cottage out of season) to £4686 (largest in high season)
