A famous Tudor manor house (1450-1616) stands in an early formal garden of magnificent yews at the heart of the Owlpen estate, steeped in 900 years of history. Owlpen and its hamlet of secluded Cotswold holiday cottages are a relaxing hideaway, surrounded by private woods and hills in the most dramatic landscape anywhere in the Cotswolds. There is peace and seclusion you will find only rarely in southern England.
Ever-popular with families, the Grist Mill is our largest cottage. With its central location close to the Cyder House and its large, open-plan ground floor, the cottage also provides an excellent hub for family reunions. Sleeping eight, this early eighteenth century watermill lies hidden at the bottom of the valley, surmounted by a leaded cupola and weather vane. It is a Listed historic building, completely restored to provide contemporary comfort and style.
It has unrivalled character and charm, with features of the old mill carefully preserved; the whole building is like a time warp. There are beams, bolting and cleaning machinery, shutes, hursts and traps inside, furnished with cottage antiques. Outside is the gigantic mill-wheel, with race and pan trough. The mill pond is a haven for wild life, coming right up to the building.
