Essex
Holiday Cottages
Rural Essex cottages of character - a notable number of thatched
holiday cottages among them - can give the lie to the idea that
this county is 'boring' and simply 'next to London'. Many a city
dweller has for example discovered the pleasures of self catering
in north Essex, close to such picture-postcard places as Thaxted
or Finchingfield. (The few holiday cottages in or near Finchingfield
are much sought-after). In another of southern England's best
kept secrets, which is the far south east corner of the county
around Paglesham and Canewdon, there are few hotels or even b-and-b's.
So, again, a holiday cottage in Essex is the thing. Nothing quite
brings the same freedom, very few hotels make you feel after just
a couple of days that when you return after a day out that you're
'coming home'.
Holiday houses in Essex might include big houses suitable for
large parties, simple thatched cottages in pretty, tucked away
villages such as those in 'the Rodings', perhaps a smart apartment
in Southend or Leigh on Sea. (For generations Southend was regarded
as 'naff' by outsiders, but now it's quite chic.) From your comfortable
Essex self-catering base it's an easy commute by train to London,
and all the nicer after a day's sightseeing there to get back
to 'London-by-the-Sea'.
