Cambridgeshire
Holiday Cottages
Good holiday cottages in Cambridgeshire are hard to come by,
but this flattish and rather mysterious county is full of interest.
A comfortable holiday cottage in the Fens, say, would make a pleasant
base from which to explore this little known corner of England.
Staying in a comfortable, centrally situated self catering apartment
in Cambridge itself is probably the best way to appreciate that
city - especially if it comes with car parking! (This is not a
car-friendly place: in fact we'd recommend going by train)
Just 16 miles away from Cambridge is Ely, and what some people
consider to be England's most beautiful cathedral. There are a
few holiday cottages in and around Ely. Rather more off the beaten
track, Littleport is a typical low-key Fenland town and the handsome
town of Wisbech is a rather 'edge of the world' place. Cottages
in the Fens are may be an acquired taste, but amid this wide-skied
country where Cambridgeshire meets Norfolk and Lincolnshire a
landscape of many spires conveys a sense of freedom and calm.
There are holiday cottages suitable for birdwatchers in and around
the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust near Welney, and self catering
for railway buffs who appreciate the fascinating, rather underrated
Nene Valley steam railway, which starts (or ends!) near Peterborough.
